Cat Says Meow (and a giveaway!)

Cat Says Meow by Michael P. Arndt by Michael Arndt (Chronicle Books, 2014)

This book won me over when I saw it last year, and it’s one that is fun to peek into again and again. And how is that the case with something so simple, but so sophisticated? So spare, but so complex? That’s the best truth of design.

Here’s what’s happening. Each spread shows an animal and its sound. And each animal is mostly made up of the letters of that sound.

It’s a fun puzzle to unlock. The portraits are bold and saturated in color, often different than we’d see them in the wild.

But here they are, wild anyway.

I do love an animal book that goes beyond the usual suspects, don’t you? A mosquito! Not my favorite friend by any means, but he looks good and menacing here.

This small volume is a perfect primer on both typography and onomatopoeia.

And it’s got killer endpapers.

A portion of  proceeds from Cat Says Meow goes to support animal rescue organizations, including the ones from where Michael’s dog (Clooney!) and cat (Aiden!) were rescued.

And for more type fun, play this kerning game and see how your eye stacks up to a designer’s. Or this one on letter forms, which is a bezier curve bonanza.

Would you like a signed copy? And these one of a kind bookmarks and vinyl stickers! You do, yes. Leave a comment here or share this post on Twitter before midnight on March 8st, PST. Good luck!

It’s a letter hunt! My bet is my 3 yr old would spend a lot of time searching for all the letters in the word. In that the letters are somewhat hidden, it’ll really make her work. Cool! Thanks :)

The end papers would be wonderful as wallpaper on a feature wall or a rug in a children’s library. And those animals would make cute t-shirts for kids. Love it!

This looks like a lot of fun! The end papers are gorgeous. It’s getting harder to find cool end papers in new books.

OK, so I got 91/100 on the kerning game. I’m sooooo glad I’m not a designer. I’d go crazy and take way too much time trying to make it all look perfect. Better stick with what I know.

Great book! The animal sound/shapes are brilliant! Flanders noted that this is a good one for art and language arts. Yes!

LOVE those endpapers! So pretty. Also, the typography teacher in me is digging the use of type. Not to mention it helps animals in need! Awesome! :) Lastly, am I the only one thinking, “What does the fox say?”

Love this book. I recently had a party at my home and brought this book out to show all of the adults. A lot of words like “WOW”, “COOL” and “NEAT” were exchanged. The adults loved it. A very sophisticated yet simple book. CHEERS :)

Thank you to everyone for your kind comments! The winner has been determined and will be mailed the giveaway package tomorrow. For those who did not win, please be aware that you will have another chance as I will be doing a giveaway the entire month of April on Goodreads.com. If you would like to rate and/or give an honest review the book, it is of course always much appreciated, but not required in order to enter. At the end, ten (10) winners will be selected at random by Goodreads and I will mail them signed copies of the book. Good luck! And please consider following us on Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest, and Twitter—all under the name “animalopoeia”—for fun posts related to animals and typography as well as the occasional book update.
