The Stinky Cheese Man and Other Fairly Stupid Tales

{by Jon Scieszka and Lane Smith}

I was a freshman in high school when this book was published. (I hope you’re bad at math.)

I bought a copy in college, and had a summer job at a library.

I bought a copy after graduation, and became an elementary school librarian.

I bought a copy to replace the old one, and became a graphic designer.

I bought a copy at my first SCBWI conference, stood in line to act up with Jon Scieszka, and became a writer.

I stood in line at ALA with that same copy to add Lane Smith’s autograph.

I spilled my guts over at my friend Jennifer Young’s blog a few weeks (months?) ago about why I love this book so much.

I started this blog one year ago and highlighted a book illustrated by Lane Smith and designed by Molly Leach.

I’ve made friends here at this little cove in cyberspace. (HI, FRIENDS!)

931 of you are following this blog by email! (HELLO, EMAIL PEOPLE!!)

And so l’d like to say thank you…THANK YOU for reading these ramblings, thank you for hanging out here, and thank you for letting me rant and rave about things like white space and color schemes and most importantly, picture books.

Do you want one? I have a bunch, and not nearly enough bookshelves.

In celebration of a year of this blog, I’d love to give you ANY book I’ve written about. With almost 100 to choose from, I hope you can find something to tickle your fancy. Just comment on this post with your pick by Sunday, September 16th at midnight PST, and I’ll choose a winner with random.org. {I may get wild and crazy and pick more than one. For real. I sometimes can’t help myself.}

PS: I know today is a day to remember something far bigger than a blog. No words, just love. (And a huge but humble thank you and welcome home to Peter David Hopson.)

Happy Anniversary! Thank YOU for this marvelous blog, Carter. I’m a fairly new reader, but your blog has become a new favorite of mine. I always look forward to your posts and recommendations.

P.S. This is a very fun contest.

Aww, you are more than welcome, Priscilla! I love the word marvelous.

  • Posted September 11, 2012 at 7:45 am | Permalink

Wow, a year of blogging already? I can’t believe it!

I love the “Hey Stinky Carter” with the signature.

And that book came out when I was already in the working world. I hope you’re REALLY REALLY bad at math.

Congratulations on a year of great books!

I can’t pick just one book. So if I happen to win, I’d want you to pick a book for me.

  • Posted September 11, 2012 at 8:43 am | Permalink

Let’s just agree that math is way unnecessary here.

  • Posted September 11, 2012 at 8:11 am | Permalink

Wow! What a great year you’ve had in cyberspace! :) Love the contest. How cool that you’ve met both Jon (not even trying to spell that last name) and Lane and got them both to sign your book! If I win, I’d love one of your spare copies of The Stinky Cheese Man because (gasp) I’ve actually never read it!

  • Posted September 11, 2012 at 8:45 am | Permalink

Ha! I look it up EVERY time I spell it just to make sure I get it right. I TRY to remember it like this: SKIES-WITH A C-PLUS Z/K/A. I don’t know that that’s actually more helpful.

  • Posted September 11, 2012 at 8:17 am | Permalink

Congratulations! The first year anniversary feels like an achievement, doesn’t it? I love your signed copy of The Stinky Cheese Man. I ended up giving it to more adults than kids when it came out.

Great contest idea but I too, wouldn’t be able to pick one. In fact, I’ve purchased many of your recommendations for U of Calgary education library which goes to show how great your blog is. Thanks.

Congratulations on your blog-o-versary! This thing is just so darn pretty, well done! I have serious blog envy.

And I am pretty good at math, but since I was a freshman in college when this book was published, I’ve got you beat :-)

Wait, I have to choose one? That’s just cruel. Alright, fine…I pick Henri’s Walk to Paris, because I had never seen it before and it blew me away.

    Thanks, Carter!

    GREAT choice!

I look forward to every DotPB post, like I looked forward to watching Ricky Spiro dissect a frog in second grade during hobby-time! He walked us through it all and blew my foot-long Wrigleys-wrapper chain right out of the water! Or was it my collection of braided-yarn doll rugs? In any case, it was his passion, as it is yours that is the key to success! Happy Blogiversary! And should I be so lucky I would give your Pantone Colors book a place of honored display in my home, right next to that wrapper chain!

  • Posted September 11, 2012 at 8:03 pm | Permalink

DOTPB! Ricky Spiro?! Why are you so hilarious?!

  • Posted September 12, 2012 at 8:59 am | Permalink

I heard poor Ricky had a nervous breakdown in med-school. I hope that was just a rumor.

  • Posted September 11, 2012 at 10:52 am | Permalink

I did the math! I did the math! But I’m not really that good at math. So who knows?! I was in 7th grade. Poor me. I could’ve really used the Stinky Cheese Man then. He would have really knocked some sense into my emotional seventh grader brain!!!

I am in awe of you! Look all that you have accomplished this year with this beautiful blog! I don’t even know 936 people on this Earth! I would love to win a book from your shelf! My wacky self would love a copy of The Stinky Cheese Man but my quiet self would be happy with And Then It’s Spring. Heck! I would be happy to just get a signed post-it note from you, the wonderful Carter Higgins! LLTW!

    Congratulations!

    LLTW!

  • Posted September 12, 2012 at 5:30 am | Permalink

OK, I am acronym deficient. A client told me she was going to be AFK for a while, and I sat there thinking up all possibilities for what that could mean, finally settling on “Away for Keebler cookies.”

Now LLTW? What the…? I found these possibilities:

    Long Life Treated Wood
    Lynn Larrow Trumpet Winsock
    Language Learning That Works
    Leds Light The World
    Literacy Leads the Way
    Long Live The Weekend
    Love Lights The Way
    Lower Little Tallapoosa Watershed

Is it any of those? Do either of you live in Little Tallapoosa? Does that name need to go into a poem soon? Yes it does.

  • Posted September 12, 2012 at 2:01 pm | Permalink

    LONG LIVE THE WACKIES!

Your list is quite impressive, and one was 3 out of 4! Ms. Banana Peel and I are obsessed with wacky books, so it’s our battle cry.

    LLTW!!

Happy one year Carter! Here’s to many more years. Your blog is so much fun to visit.

I was a freshman too! Yikes, where have all those years gone? haha.

If I had to pick one book it would be The Gingerbread Man Loose In the School. The trailor was adorable :)

  • Posted September 11, 2012 at 7:59 pm | Permalink

Twinsies:) Oh gosh, that Gingerbread Man is adorable.

  • Posted September 11, 2012 at 11:09 am | Permalink

okay. now i feel old. i was a junior in college. which is of course why i never heard of Stinky Cheese Man until a year ago. thankfully i have read parts of it and my kids do enjoy it. Congrats on the one-year! Didn’t realize you had done a 100 reviews that’s amazing! I’d be interested in getting Home For Bird or Boy+Bot or Stinky Cheese Man. Thanks!

    You have great taste!

  • Posted September 11, 2012 at 11:19 am | Permalink

It’s hard to believe you’ve only been blogging for one year! You set the standard for blogging success my dear! I will have to go through your posts to choose a book I might like. I’m salivating at the prospect!! :-)

  • Posted September 11, 2012 at 7:59 pm | Permalink

    Drool, baby, drool.

  • Posted September 11, 2012 at 11:21 am | Permalink

Thanks so much for this year of blogposts, Carter! I’m far from an English-language library or bookstore so it’s been nice leafing through these books with you. You’re design analyses (that’s plural, right?) are spot on. I was a graphic designer in another lifetime so I find this perspective interesting and so darn original. Happy Happy, Carter! (I still can’t believe I met you before I knew you!)

  • Posted September 11, 2012 at 7:58 pm | Permalink

I know, right?! And RIGHT after my near-faint-and-fall-in-it spell with Mr. Scieszka even!

  • Posted September 11, 2012 at 11:24 am | Permalink

Cork popping, time! Congratulations, Carter. You’ve accomplished so much young lady! i’m a new reader of your blog. Flipped over you at WOC a few weeks ago. You are a wonderful storyteller. I’m the Pammy to whom you were so kind. I’d love to have the Stinky Cheese Man. So to random, org: “C’mon, random, mama needs a new book!”

Congrats on your anniversary, Carter, and on creating such a gorgeous place to give us glimpses into the art of the PB. I love it here, I really do. The colors and graphics and photos are always so pretty.

Should I be the lucky winner, I, too, would have to go with Stinky Cheese Man just because it is your favorite and you have good taste. And the pics in today’s post didn’t hurt, either.

Oh, and I was a “returning” (aka older than everyone else) college student when the book came out, so pipe down. :)

  • Posted September 11, 2012 at 7:55 pm | Permalink

Can’t go wrong with that Stinky Cheese Man. If I were to ever get a tattoo…

    (TOTALLY KIDDING. OUCH.)

What a great giveaway, Carter! Congratulations on your 1-year anniversary. Your blog is so fun and PRETTY. I love it.

I was a junior in college when Stinky Cheese Man came out…*sigh*

I can’t pick a favorite. Will have to think about it if I am lucky enough to win. :-)

Happy Blogoversary DotPB! Props to Julie Rowan Zoch for the acronym which is hip and fun. (She lost me with the Ricky Spiro reference, but I do also love her selection of Pantone Colors. DotPB did such a great job reviewing that book.).

Wishing you many many more posts and reviews, followers and successes. I have learned how to *see* a PB in a new way from you, Carter. Thank you!

    What a cool blog!
I LOVE all the pictures of the picture books….I often feel like I want to take a picture of each spread of each book I read!
I actually told a friend today,
“If I ever get rich, I’m totally buying picture book art straight from the artist to hang on my walls.”
Congrats on one year! And here’s to many more!!
As far as books go, Rapido’s next stop looks amazing.
I’m looking for the original in French as we speak as well!

  • Posted September 12, 2012 at 2:02 pm | Permalink

I’m so doing that, too. Best art ever!

It was the colours and design of your blog that got me interested to start with. I love it. Would live a book if you are giving them wow! I have 2 young boys and they love reading at 2 and 4 years old. I’m afraid I only came across your blog not long ago and don’t know the titles of your books. Anything suitable would be fab. In meantime, I’ll carry in reading a great blog.

Love the blog and found it not long ago. It was the colours and vibe of it that got me to follow! I have a 4 and 2 year old (boys) and was interested in following the books. Don’t know your books yet (am a Brit ) but would love one if you are giving them away to find out more. Good luck with future !

Congratulations on the anniversary! It gives me hope for my blog :) I think I need to take lessons from you on how to keep it going and how to be a one woman publicity show! I love reading your posts. It is always a highlight in my mailbox. I am so happy to see you successful in our field and I know for sure in our new field soon! I feel like this coming year is going to be big! If I win I will have to make up my mind between A Few Blocks and A Home for Bird, but I’ll wait to make that decision until I have to (or you can surprise me 😉 ). Love and creativity to you!

Carter, congrats on one year of your blog- I’ve enjoyed reading it the past few months! As someone who has aspired to write children’s books since the second grade (but who is incredibly intimidated to actually pursue it), I’m encouraged by your enthusiasm and your willingness to just put yourself out there and go for it! You better make sure Greenville is on your book tour some day :)
