You Are My Cupcake

It’s impossible to look at the cover of this adorable board book and not smile. Right? I mean look at those little pink cheeks! And the sprinkles! And the sparkles! It’s perfect. I was lucky enough to meet the amazing Joyce Wan at this summer’s SCBWI conference in LA, and she is just as warm and inviting as her book. Her site is a treasure chest of beautifully designed notecards, prints, totes, and of course, amazing children’s books.

My mushy little sweet pea, My oven baked cutie pie

You Are My Cupcake celebrates all of the sweet sounding nicknames we give to the little ones we love. Each page is a bright and bold spread with a whimsical foodie character and a relevant term of endearment. It’s quick, quirky, and yummy.

UNITY

Unity is a graphic design principle referring to wholeness and consistency. When multiple design elements complement each other in a harmonious manner,  this is unity.  A board book is so tightly written and illustrated that its design has to consider unity. Joyce Wan’s elements could not achieve this any better. Each darling little character has similarly weighted lines, each page has a subtle and repeating background texture, the color palette hovers around the same level of tint and saturation, and the hand drawn typography mirrors the details of each charming little character.

Skip the vegetables. Eat this scrumptious treat for dinner. And dessert.

Carter this book is DARLING! What a fun idea. You are right. It’s impossible to pass up without adoring it. I would love to add this to my collection. So glad you were able to meet Joyce and share this awesome book with us. :)

I know! Do you have a little girl? Although, I don’t, and still own this book:) She has a new one coming out soon-ish I think. I’m on the lookout for that one, too.
